It is not enough just to build a website, upload it, go live and hope customers will stumble across it.

There are millions of web pages already out there. So, how do you make sure people know your website is there? The answer is online marketing. One way is to start your online marketing is to submit to the major search engines such as Google and Yahoo. In fact this is essential but only one of a number of things you must do.

Plus below you will find links and information that will enable you to get your site known and increase your hit rate.

Affiliate Programs

You can sell your own products or services through affiliate programs such as Clickbank or PayDotCom Both these programs allow you to recruit affiliates (independent sellers) who will promote and sell your products for a percentage of any sales from leads they send you. It's normal to offer a good percentage as without the affiliate sending you the lead you would not have sold your product at all.

If you own a website but do not have anything to sell, say on an information site for example, then once you have traffic, you can join affiliate programs as a seller and make money selling other peoples goods or services. You are either paid per click (i.e Google AdSense) or when a 'new user' buys or signs up for the product (i.e Amazon.com). Amounts can be as little as 1 cent per click so it pays to find out more about the program before you sign up for it. For example, if the 'new user' subsequently buys another product at a later date you may not get paid again (such as with Amazon.com). What happens if they don't buy straight away? How long is the referral you sent valid for?

Ezines

These are electronic magazines delivered via email to interested parties. Existing ezines may have customer bases of 20,000 upwards. You can start your own or join an existing one at a small fee and put your own advertisements on them. They can be plain text or graphical (html) based.

Banner Exchange Programs

Banner programs require you to create your own banner and put it on an existing banner network. The advantage is that the network already exists and your banner will be shown throughout the network. You can either pay for the number of 'impressions' you require or, place code on your website which shows other banners on your page. In return your banner is shown Read FREE , usually with a ratio of 2:1 or 3:1. In other words for every 2 banners belonging to someone else you display on your site, your own site is shown once on the network (2:1).

Multiple Submission Engines

You can spend a lot of time submitting to each search engine in turn or you can use a bulk submitter. Bearing in mind there are THOUSANDS of search engines and classified pages out there it makes sense to use them. You should think about re-submitting your site to the search engines once every month. Classifieds should be done weekly or in the case of the busy ones, daily.

Pay Per Click Search Engines

Okay, so how can you get near the top of the search engines? One way is Pay Per Click such as the leading program from Google. In this you normally 'bid' on keywords and only pay if someone clicks on your ad. If someone outbids you there ad is placed higher up. By choosing your keywords carefully you can still get in the top 3 or 4 places without spending a fortune. Usually you set a maximum per click value and a monthly or daily maximum limit.

Google, thankfully, are not the only ones in the game now. MSN, Yahoo and others have their own versions, some considerably cheaper per click than Google.

Bulk Email

Done sensibly with 'opt-in' lists and targeted markets these can get your site well known very quickly to a large number of interested prospects. Not to be confused with Spam email which is sent to anybody with an email address whether interested or not and is slowly being made illegal in many countries.
